United Policyholders is a 501(c)(3) public benefit corporation, which means we can’t endorse or oppose candidates for public office.  But without a doubt – the outcomes of elections impact our work in many ways:  Partisan elected officials choose the judges that preside over insurance matters. The decisions that judges make have a huge impact on insurance company decision-making, and in turn the people we serve. In the vast majority of states, the Governor appoints the head of the state agency that regulates insurance.  If an elected State Governor doesn’t believe in regulating businesses, they tend to appoint Commissioners who share that view.  Here’s an example.  If an elected State Governor believes in regulating businesses, they tend to appoint pro-consumer, pro-active regulators.  Here’s an example.
