I am a home owner who lost his home due to a fire in March 2022. The house is currently being built by a contractor who I signed a closed contract with. I’ve been having difficulties with my contractor due to the financial limitations given to me for any item I choose for the house, like tiles, floors, paint and kitchen cabinets. I feel like I’m being short changed but I’m unsure what rights I have since I signed this closed contact back in August of 2023. Could anyone assist me with this issue?
Dear Jorge,
If the contractor who is not sticking to the original work and/or budget timeline was recommended to you by the insurance company, contact the insurer and ask them to help you bring him in line. If he is someone you found on your own, we suggest you put your concerns in writing and email them to the contractor or print them out and hand them to him. Be specific. If that doesn’t work and you believe you’re being cheated or scammed, file an online complaint with the State Division of Consumer Affairs by visiting its website or by calling 1-800-242-5846 (toll free within New Jersey) or 973-504- 6200. See, for example.
We hope this helps!
