Insurance claim settlement

I can’t cash a check because there are 2 payees listed. Can the insurance company legally put and/or between the two payees?

If both payees are listed as insureds on the declarations page, the insurer considers it legally necessary to put both of them on a check. If they’ve written “and/or” that would give one payee the right to cash it without the other’s permission which exposes the insurer to liability to the payee who didn’t give permission.
