Can an insurance company drop coverage due to the home being unoccupied during plumbing renovations? This occurred, and then the house was destroyed days later due to the Oak Fire. Is there anything that can be done, other than filing a complaint with the Department of Insurance?
All insurance policies have a vacancy clause. Depending on the clause, certain types of coverage can be suspended if certain conditions are met. I would suggest having an attorney review your policy to see if the vacancy clause was being triggered appropriately or not. There is no specific standard between insurance companies, however, what I typically see is if the home is vacant for 30 days or more a vacancy exclusion may be in put in effect.
