Should we provide our repair estimate before we receive insurance adjuster estimate? Laura Suby asked 2 years ago
Should we provide our repair estimate before we receive insurance adjuster estimate?

Our house was damaged by Hurricane Ian. We have heard nothing from our insurance company in more than a month, despite repeated inquiries and emails. Field adjuster visit was Oct. 9. We have received a couple of estimates for repair/replacement of our roof. Is it wise for us to provide our insurance company with estimates before they have provided us with any of their own estimates and calculations?

In the interest of keeping things moving forward and demonstrating your cooperation in the claim process, you can forward the estimates along with a dated cover letter/email and request a prompt reply. As a Florida resident, you have the right to a timely and thorough inspection and a fair offer from your insurer. This publication details where that right is explained in FL law: https://uphelp.org/claim-guidance-publications/insurance-consumer-rights-in-florida-2022/ We understand there are not enough adjusters working for insurance companies on Ian and Nicole claims so the ones that are there are overloaded and while that’s not an excuse, it likely explains the delay. A recent article in the Tampa Bay Business Journal documents the phenomenon. https://www.bizjournals.com/tampabay/news/2022/12/02/adjuster-claims-guidance-upc-insurance.html Unfortunately the article is behind a paywall so we can’t share it.
