I live in a townhouse condominium complex where 2 neighbors each share the same building: one roof and one shared wall. My neighbor and I each were insured by State Farm. My fire coverage was not renewed by State Farm, effective Dec. 10, 2024 and I was placed on California Fair Plan. My neighbor’s fire coverage was renewed in Dec. 2024. Is such an arbitrary decision legal where one resident in the same building can continue with the policy and the other is cancelled? I have never filed a claim with State Farm and have all my insurances “bundled” with them. Thank you.
Good morning,
I can imagine how frustrating the situation is. One thing is for sure, I’ve never seen an insurer do something entirely arbitrarily. While I don’t have details in your specific situation, there me be other reasons for one policy being non-renewed and the other not. Just to name a few, if one household has history of claims whereas the other does not, one household has more than one line of insurance with State Farm (home and auto for example) potential fire alarm system in one household, tenure with the insurance company and more. If you would like to find out the specific reasons, you can reach out to the California Department of Insurance and ask for a copy of the underwriting filing that was approved and try to piece it together.
Stay safe –
