Can I use my ALE for a room rented from a family member? Amber Christiansen asked 1 month ago
Can I use my ALE for a room rented from a family member?

I lost my home in Palisades fire and have been renting an Airbnb in California ever since, but now I’m going to be relocating to Oregon to rent a room from a family member. I will be paying rent and I’m wondering if I can use my ALE benefits for my State Farm homeowner’s insurance to pay for the rent.

The house where I’ll be renting a room is my daughter’s house who is managing my care since (I am 94 years old).

If it matters, if I were not renting this room she would be renting it to somebody else. I have a rental agreement and signed a lease.

Hi Amber, yes you should be able to use your ALE funds to rent a room from your daughter with a properly executed lease agreement representing market rates. We would recommend that you contact your carrier to confirm and inquire as to the necessary documentation you should provide for reimbursement, which is typically a copy of the lease agreement. The carrier may want to work with you on the duration of your lease agreement, which would be pending the adjudication of your claim and the rebuild or replacement time for your home.
