Coverage for gardens – Checklist question

Palisades fire victim here again. I have additional coverage in the amount of 10% of my Coverage A limit for, “Trees, Shrubs and other Plants.” Is there a checklist, template or other guideline document showing how to create and calculate a loss statement for such garden coverage? Additionally, I had 6 inches of soil removed via debris removal by government requirement (as did everybody). Is there a standard to calculate the cost to remediate the soil removal?

Hi JD,

We would encourage you to review your policy language for the additional coverages related Trees, Shrubs, and Plants. Often there are sublimits for the coverage (for example $500 per tree, shrub, plant). This sublimit would apply to the removal and replacement of the plant (labor and materials). So in this example, the most you could get for a large tree would be $500. There may be additional limitations for grasses/lawns, pedning on your policy’s specific language.

We would recommend that you start a detailed inventory of your landscaping losses. Try to be specific and include the varietal and approximate size (1 gallon perennial shrub, 4 inch diameter evergreen tree, etc). And if possible, it is always in your best interest to source the plants and provide replacement costs and/or storage information, if you are buying specialty plants. Include annuals and perennials. Include all trees, flowers, shrubs, pots, irrigation for plants (sprinkler heads, lines, control boxes etc), as some carriers include irrigation under the Trees, Shrubs, Plants coverage.

Kindly, UP Staff
