I am seeking to do a significant addition to my home. The addition would add over 800sf of living space to an existing 2,000sf home plus a garage and non-occupied basement space. I asked my insurance agent (State Farm) about Course of Construction Insurance but he told me my existing homeowner policy covers me. I cannot find in my policy where is this explicit. I am wondering if it is typical for a homeowner policy to provide Course of Construction/Builders Risk Insurance for significant additions to a home. thank you, Robert Vitale
Hi Robert,
We recently presented a webinar on this topic. Please watch Course of Construction/ Builder’s Risk insurance review for detailed information on this coverage. Although it is intended for people rebuilding their homes after a disaster, there is also useful guidance for your situation.
Depending on your situation, you may need Course of Construction coverage or other insurance to protect you for construction related incidents. Consider asking if your contractor has insurance. Read 5 Reasons Why a Contractor Should Have Insurance for more information.
