Renter underinsured

The house we were renting burned to the Eaton fire completely while we were away. I had a renter’s insurance that covered only 15% of the value of the belongings in the house. The insurance refused to go over their policy limit even though I said orally they were supposed to give me advice on the limits and readjust every year and they did not. Do I have a case and what would be the next steps for me?

Hi Charles, we’re sorry to hear of your fire loss and unfortunate situation. Given the information you shared, it sounds like you were underinsured. Your policy limits at the time of the loss are the most that the carrier will provide for your fire loss. Often policy limits are adjusted annually for inflation, but this adjustment it typically a low $$ value.
