I recently received a non-renewal notice from Farmers for my home in Ojai Valley, California. I am in a fire hazard area designated as “very high.” My agent said she would try to find alternative coverage. I also telephoned agents from other insurance companies, and they told me that they could not begin the process of evaluating my property for insurance until 60 days before my current Farmers policy expires. My question is, is there ANY hope of getting a replacement fire policy outside of the FAIR plan? If so, what companies are writing new policies in the Ojai Valley given that nearly the entire area is in an area considered to be “very high” in terms of fire hazard?
Dear James,
You asked this question awhile ago and the answer never got published. Our deepest apologies.
If you dig into this slide deck, you’ll see the names of some insurers that might be an option for you. We hear rumors that CSAA and Mercury are picking up new customers, so you should try both of them.
Finding a good, proactive agent who’s dialed in to the current market is key. There are a few insurance agents that volunteer with and support our non profit organization – they’re listed here: https://uphelp.org/sponsor-location/california/ (select “Insurance Agent/Broker” from the drop down menu). You can try both of those agencies, even though they’re not in the Ojai area.
Best of luck!
