What is the purpose of a “lifestyle interview”?

Hello!

After my 86-year-old parents lost their home in the Marshall Fire in Colorado, their insurance company agreed to a “lifestyle interview” to discuss their contents coverage. It was our understanding, that the “lifestyle interview” meant that they wouldn’t need to do a detailed inventory list, given their ages and the fact that they aren’t tech savvy. Is that your understanding of what a “lifestyle interviews” are for? Is there a standard definition? Thank you for whatever guidance you can provide!

Sincerely,

Shivaun Korfanta

Hi Shivaun,

A lifestyle interview is the carrier’s way of ‘getting to know the insureds,’ what their hobbies are, how they live, what’s important to them. Unfortunately, this interview does not take the place of a detailed content inventory.

In order to maximize your policy limits, it is best that you complete the full detailed inventory. After all, you know your contents best! Often a carrier will allow you to lump equal like/kind items together, such as fiction paperback books. This can make the inventory process easier.

UP provides multiple resources to help you through this process, including professional help in your area, should you need it.
