Wildfire loss while property rented but I had a homeowner policy

My home was destroyed in the recent Eaton Canyon wildfire in Southern California. I rented my house out six months ago and had not changed my policy from a homeowners policy to a landlord’s policy. Will my claim be denied? Can I get loss of use on rental income?

We are sorry for your loss. It is best to request a copy of your policy and also update your agent or carrier that this home is a rental property and no longer your primary residence. Your homeowners policy may provide coverage for Loss of Rents related to your tenants but you would need to review your Additional Living Expense/Loss of Rents coverage after receiving a copy of your policy. And typically, the carrier will request a copy of your lease agreement to verify your rents.
