My house is still standing after the Eaton Fire, but it was smoke damaged. I contracted with ServPro for remediation, and my insurer (AAA) paid me the total amount of their estimate. ServPro cleaned my house, and afterwards, I paid for an industrial hygienist to do post-remediation testing for contaminants (there hadn’t been any testing before remediation). The tests came back above recommended limits in several living areas and the attic for lead, arsenic, and nickel, and for asbestos in a bedroom and the HVAC vents in the attic (which had been cleaned by a ServPro subcontractor). Can I insist that insurance pay for additional remediation and/or for replacing the HVAC vents?
Hi Laura, we are sorry that your home has been damaged and improperly remediated after the wildfire. Yes, you absolutely should contact Servpro and your carrier with the post clearance testing results, which sound like have failed several areas of your home. Your policy owes to bring you back to preloss condition and if the remediation work was not done properly, the vendor should have the opportunity to repair the issues. But we would recommend that you speak in detail with your adjuster, who should also pay for the post clearance testing and create a plan of action to address the ensuing damages.
