In contents inventory, what do I do if I don’t know the date the item was purchased, or even have a general idea?

Hi Sally, great question!

If you do not know the exact age or purchase date of an item, provide your best good-faith estimate rather than guessing at a specific date. UP’s guidance recognizes that contents inventories may identify an item’s approximate age. You can use photographs, receipts, records, model information, family recollections, or other available evidence to help establish a reasonable range. Keep in mind that depreciation should reflect both age and the item’s actual pre-loss condition, and depreciation applied by an insurer can be questioned and negotiated.
