Extreme heat damage

Where can I find a structural engineer or other professional to assess my home for extreme heat damage or secondary damages? I am concerned that our house may have been affected because our attic had 95% humidity for about six weeks after they eaten fire. My bedroom walls were damp. All my furniture was damp in the bedroom and even the clothing in my drawers were damp and I don’t know if I should be worried about mold now. The house next door burnt down and I am wondering if the stucco is compromised and whether the roof is compromised.

Hi Cindy,

You can can find a structural engineer or other professionals to assess your home for extreme heat damage and secondary issues like moisture intrusion and mold through the following methods:

  1. California Board for Professional Engineers: Search for licensed structural engineers at http://www.bpelsg.ca.gov.
  2. Local Building Departments: Your city or county building department may have recommendations for qualified professionals.
  3. American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE): Use their directory to find engineers experienced in fire-related structural assessments.
  4. Insurance & Restoration Specialists: Fire restoration contractors and industrial hygienists can inspect for structural damage, moisture, and mold growth.
  5. Home Inspector Associations: Organizations like ASHI (www.homeinspector.org) or CREIA (www.creia.org) have certified inspectors who assess post-fire damage.

Key Concerns:

• Stucco Damage: Extreme heat can cause stucco to crack or delaminate, especially if the home next door burned down.

• Roof Damage: Heat exposure can weaken roofing materials, underlayment, and trusses.

• Moisture & Mold: High humidity (95% for six weeks) and damp walls/furniture suggest a high risk for mold. An industrial hygienist can test for mold and air quality concerns.

Good luck, Troy
