Major insurance company retroactively reversing approval, California

Our house was devastated and more or less destroyed in a wildfire 3 years ago. We were dramatically underinsured, but approved by Geico for the limit of our policy with ability to submit for an extra 25% on back end. Our agent left/retired. And three years later, with the insurance company contractor almost done, a new agent is going over the old, already-approved claim and demanding it be reduced for this, that, and the other thing. This seems entirely illegal– in California or any other state. Our contractor has demanded the case be pushed up the ladder but meanwhile, what should we do –this has to be illegal. Thanks for help.

Dear Pamela,

Thank you for your question. We recommend you contact the consumer help department at California Department of Insurance as soon as possible to ask for their assistance in resolving this problem. Also, we are wondering if you mean your adjuster, and not your agent?

If you feel you need legal assistance, you can try our Find Help directory to find attorneys in California who have experience in insurance law. Good luck!
