Hi Carol,
The CA Safer from Wildfires regulation says that admitted California insurers (including the CA FAIR Plan) must offer a discounts for policyholders who reside within an NFPA Firewise USA Community in good standing.
Each insurer has a separate process for documenting and verifying eligibility for the Firewise USA Community discount. One challenge is that NFPA Firewise is a voluntary program and does not require that site coordinators list every property that is a member of their community. There are efforts by NFPA, insurance industry data providers, CalFire, and others to map all Firewise USA Communities in California at the parcel level and make this available to insurers to assist with verification.
To request the Firewise USA discount from your insurer, contact your agent to understand the process and required documentation. You may need to request a copy of your community’s current designation from your site coordinator along with a map of your Firewise USA Community that includes addresses and/or parcel numbers.
Discounts for Firewise USA range between 1-10% depending on the insurer, and some apply to the entire policy premium and others to only the wildfire insurance portion of the premium.
