What Flexibility might there be in “Like for Like”?

The City of Los Angeles, following the Palisades Fire, will fast-track approvals and waive many permitting fees for a rebuilt home that is no more than 10% larger in square footage than the dwelling before the fire. If we take advantage of this frankly generous situation, do you have any idea what sort of response we are likely to receive from our insurer?

Specifically, in order to rebuild a home in which we can “age in place,” we might need to go about 150–200 square feet beyond the original house plus the 10% allowance. We have extended replacement value in our policy, along with a provision for up to 200% of the base policy limits in the event of a declared emergency, so we do not believe policy limits will be an issue.

We will still have the same number of bedrooms and bathrooms as the originally insured dwelling.

Thank you again for the great work you do.
