Wildfire Risk Reduction (Mitigation) Resources

View grants, community programs and information that can help you reduce the chances of a wildfire damaging or destroying your home. “Home hardening” means home improvements.  “Defensible space” means creating a plant and tree-free zone around your home.

Marin Wildfire Resident Grants Marin Wildlife’s grant funded Wildfire Risk Home Evaluation Program helps applicants identify what wildfire risks are present on their properties and creates solutions to address those risks by providing home hardening and defensible space assistance.

The 2024 grant program is closed;  Contact Marin Wildfire at grants@marinwildfire.org to learn about the future of the program.

Novato Fire Department Wildfire Mitigatino Program The Novato Fire Department mitigation team offers appointments for free personalized assessments, recommendations for improvements, and information on financial assistance programs.

After receiving an assessment, you can apply for a Home Hardening and Vegetation grant.

San Rafael Fire Department Wildfire Mitigation Program The San Rafael Fire Department Wildfire Mitigation Team conducts wildfire mitigation projects and home assessments throughout the San Rafael area. Some assistance may be available to directly help low-income, elderly, and disabled homeowners reduce the wildfire risk around their homes as well as other wildfire mitigation

Landscaper Training Fire Safe Marin – Fire Safe Marin has established a partnership with the Northern California Landscape Contractors Association (NCLCA). Fire Safe Marin, with support and assistance from representatives of NCLCA developed a training program (online or in person) for landscape professionals.
