New Construction in a Fire Zone–No One will Insure Us

Our course of construction insurance is about to lapse, and we are struggling to find homeowner’s insurance, even though our new house is very firesafe (it was built that way). Fair Plan is backlogged and no one is writing policies in our area. We live in the Santa Cruz Mountains, CA. What do we do? Thanks. Julie

Dear Julie, Sadly, many of your CZU impacted neighbors (and those who weren’t but live in the region) are having similar problems. If you’re working with a good agent, you should be able to eventually find an option or get a FAIR Plan policy bound. It’s a bit of a mess – agents are having to sit on hold for hours to get someone at the FAIR Plan to answer the phone. According to our survey results, some people are getting coverage through Rivington – try them.
