Wildfire Risk Reduction (Mitigation) Resources

View grants, community programs and information that can help you reduce the chances of a wildfire damaging or destroying your home. “Home hardening” means home improvements.  “Defensible space” means creating a plant and tree-free zone around your home.

Southern Humboldt Fire Safe Chipper Program The Southern Humboldt Fire Safe Council offers free vegetation chipping service to help reduce wildfire fuel around properties in Southern Humboldt and Shelter Cove.

Willow Creek Chipper Program The Willow Creek Fire Safe Council offers a free chipping service in the greater Willow Creek area to assist with wildfire fuel reduction creation of defensible space around residences.

Fire-adapted Landscapes And Safe Homes (FLASH) Program FLASH is a grant funded cost share program designed to assist property owners with reducing their wildfire risk by managing flammable vegetation around their homes and along key access routes.

Greater Willow Creek Wildfire Resilience Project This grant-funded project provides fuels reduction, defensible space, and home hardening assistance for residents and areas in Greater Willow Creek.

Southern Humboldt Defensible Space Project
The Briceland Fire Department in collaboration with the Humboldt County Fire Safe Council offer free wildfire home risk assessments and a defensible space treatment program for low income, elderly, and disabled persons in Humboldt County.
