Below you will find local wildfire preparedness programs, grants and resources to help you make home / property improvements and reduce wildfire risk in your community.  Scroll down to access grants and resources for Marin County.

Wildfire Risk Reduction (Mitigation) Resources

View grants, community programs and information that can help you reduce the chances of a wildfire damaging or destroying your home. “Home hardening” means home improvements.  “Defensible space” means creating a buffer zone around a home or building that is modified to reduce wildfire risk by clearing flammable vegetation, using fire-resistant materials, and ensuring safe access for emergency responders.

Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority Marin Wildfire and its member agencies offer residents home hardening and defensible space grants, free curbside chipper service, and other resources. Residents can access all resources through their property’s Wildfire Risk Reports that result from properties’ defensible space inspection

Marin Wildfire Resident Grants Grants are available for Marin residents to address hazards identified on their wildfire risk report. To begin the process, visit this page to view the report from a recent evaluation and apply. If you haven’t received a recent evaluation, you will be prompted to schedule one.
Fire Safe Marin Fire Safe Marin’s website offers a comprehensive range of resources to help residents prepare for wildfire, including science-based information on home hardening, defensible space, evacuation checklists, and support for Firewise communities. The FSM YouTube features educational videos, timely updates and deep dives into resilience topics. Additionally, FSM produces a monthly e-newsletter, social media updates, and promotes local community events. The site also provides access to educational resources for landscaping and construction professionals, along with materials for schools, bilingual outreach, and wildfire safety tools such as signage and printed guides.

Resources for Landscape Professionals

Fire Safe Marin has partnered with the Northern California Landscape Contractors Association (NCLCA) to develop practical wildfire resilience resources for landscaping professionals. These resources include printed guides, videos, checklists, best-practice recommendations, and other educational materials designed to help professionals incorporate wildfire-resistant landscaping principles into their work. Novato Fire Department Wildfire Mitigation Program The Novato Fire Department mitigation team offers appointments for free personalized assessments, recommendations for improvements, and information on financial assistance programs.

After receiving an assessment, you can apply for a Home Hardening and Vegetation grant.

San Rafael Fire Department Wildfire Mitigation Program The San Rafael Fire Department Wildfire Mitigation Team conducts free wildfire risk assessments throughout the San Rafael and Marinwood areas. Residents can get money back for completing risk reduction projects on their property through San Rafael Fire’s Wildfire Risk Reduction Refund Program. To learn more about refund opportunities, visit srfd.org/grants. Low income, elderly or disabled homeowners can reach out for additional financial assistance opportunities through the Direct Residence Assistance Program. Landscaper Training Fire Safe Marin – Fire Safe Marin has established a partnership with the Northern California Landscape Contractors Association (NCLCA). Fire Safe Marin, with support and assistance from representatives of NCLCA developed a training program (online or in person) for landscape professionals.

Southern Marin Fire Department Defensible space inspections are provided by full time Southern Marin Fire Department staff and seasonal inspections are provided by Marin Defensible Space Alliance (MDSA). Southern Marin Fire also provides free curbside chipping Chipper Program | Southern Marin Fire Protection District, CA for neighborhoods.
Marin Defensible Space Alliance The Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority “Defensible Space Alliance” (MDSA) provides seasonal defensible space inspections for Southern, Central, and West Marin, including: Marin County Fire Department, Central Marin Fire Authority, Ross Valley Fire Department, Kentfield Fire District, Southern Marin Fire District, Muir Beach CSD, Stinson Beach Fire District, Bolinas Fire District, and Inverness PUD. Residents can access grants and free curbside chipper service through their property’s Wildfire Risk Report at www.marinwildfire.org/dspace
EmberReady Neighborhoods EmberReady helps Marin residents turn wildfire awareness into meaningful action. By making Zone 0 implementation, fire-smart landscaping, and home hardening simpler to understand and easier to act on, the program provides a clearer path from risk mitigation to wildfire resilience.

Built around practical, property-specific improvements and guided support, EmberReady empowers residents to focus on the steps that matter most: building stronger homes, stronger neighborhoods, and a more wildfire-resilient Marin.
