Wildfire Risk Reduction (Mitigation) Resources

View grants, community programs and information that can help you reduce the chances of a wildfire damaging or destroying your home. “Home hardening” means home improvements.  “Defensible space” means creating a plant and tree-free zone around your home.

Home Evaluation Program The Santa Barbara Fire Safe Council offers free home evaluations to review defensible space and home hardening principles to make specific recommendations based on your property.

Defensible Space Program The Defensible Space Assistance Program is designed to provide support for Santa Barbara County residents in need of help managing their defensible space.

Home Hardening Program The Home Hardening Assistance Program is designed to help Santa Barbara County residents install foundation and laundry vents that prevent ember intrusion into their home during a wildfire event.

Community Chipping Program The Santa Barbara County Fire Safe Council offers free curbside chipping services for residents throughout the south coast of Santa Barbara County to reduce fire risks around their homes by promoting defensible space creation.

Match.Graze Program Reduce your wildfire risk through grazing using a free online platform that connects livestock producers and landowners.
Regional Wildfire Mitigation Program Funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, this program works to turn the south coast area of Santa Barbara County into a fire-adapted region.
Santa Barbara County Resilience Priorities Funded by the California Coastal Conservancy, this program identifies priority projects to increase wildfire resilience. View completed projects or submit a proposal on their website.
