It’s an unsettling scene: A person in a bunny suit and respirator steps gingerly through the living room of a well-worn home, a Christmas tree strung with ornaments still standing in the corner. Like any good image, this photo prompts all sorts of questions for me: Who is this? Whose home are they in? And what danger lurks that requires a hazmat suit in the midst of such a cozy domestic scene?

Early last year, the Eaton and Pacific Palisades fires ripped through Los Angeles County, killing dozens of people, destroying over 16,000 structures and displacing thousands of people, including Altadena homeowner Debbie McMahon, pictured above. Read more of photos and the story.
