As Spokane continues recovering from the Spokane Area Complex Fires, many people are facing questions about insurance and what help they can claim.
At the Spokane Strong Wildfire Recovery Event, groups including United Policyholders helped people sort through their options and understand what their policies may cover.
Jeri Curry with United Policyholders said the first step was contacting an insurance company so people knew whether they may have a claim. Curry also explained that people needed to review and document what was inside their homes.
“When they’ve lost everything in a fire, it becomes really challenging to remember what someone had in a home. And that’s how insurance companies pay out on contents; you have to document what you had,” Curry said. “And so that’s probably the hardest. And I would say maybe that’s where people maybe miss out on as much as they could get from their insurance companies and compensating for their losses,” said Curry.
Curry adds that you may be eligible for grocery reimbursement if you were evacuated. She said many people who stopped by her table did not know how to begin working through their insurance policies. She said they were thankful she was at the event.
People who could not attend can still go to the Spokane Strong recovery event at North Central High School on Sunday from Noon to 8:00 p.m.
More than a dozen resources will be available for people impacted by the Spokane Area Complex Fires. The event is free and open to the public.
