Submitting comments on proposed changes to your state’s insurance laws is a no-cost way of helping protect yourself as a consumer. Your insurance company is making their voice heard – you can too!

There are many proposals making their way through state legislatures across the country today that relate to the cost, quality and availability of home and car insurance.

With a bit of research, you can weigh in if there’s one that matters to you. Most states have a web page that walks you through the process of submitting comments.

Here are a some of the letters United Policyholders has recently submitted to advance our mission of insurance fairness, disaster resiliency and improved disaster recovery:

• Helping people fortify their roofs and homes against disasters(Congress/National)

• Eliminating insurers’ requirement that total loss disaster victims go through the agony of remembering and listing every single item they lost (including the insides of every drawer and closet, pantries, garages, etc.) if they want full compensation. (California)

• Preventing insurers from unfairly reducing what they pay to restore damaged property by depreciating the cost of labor (Alaska)

• Making sure insurance companies pay torestore damaged property to a uniform and consistent (not patchwork) appearance (Iowa)

• Empowering the state’s Insurance Commissioner toseek restitution for consumers who’ve been ripped off. (Washington)
